1. Will it work on my slurry?

If your slurry doesn’t have hard particles over 3mm, and it forms good flocs with polyelectrolyte, then it will almost certainly dewater in the V-FOLD filter. V-FOLD distributors can help with selection of the right polyelectrolyte for your application (see FAQ 3 below).

Many other slurries can be dewatered in a V-FOLD (some without polyelectrolyte addition) and advice is available from V-FOLD distributors (see Contact Us)

2. Will a V-FOLD filter properly dewater all my slurry?

As with all dewatering devices, performance of the V-FOLD depends on feed slurry characteristics. We have experience with a wide range of slurries from many different applications and V-FOLD distributors can advise on your dewatering problem (see Contact Us).

3. What is a polyelectrolyte?

Nearly all types of dewatering devices need the feed slurry "conditioned" to improve its filtration characteristics. This is usually achieved with the V-FOLD by dosing a small amount of polyelectrolyte into a “serpentine” mixer/flocculator mounted on the filter.

The polyelectrolytes (polymers) used in wastewater treatment are very large organic molecules that attach to tiny solid particles and bind them into chunks (technically called "flocs"). The chemistry of this process is quite complex, but in practice the correct selection of polyelectrolyte allows reliable flocculation to occur. If you are already using a polyelectrolyte in your effluent treatment plant, then usually (but not always) the same polyelectrolyte can be used with the V-FOLD. "mass flowrate" of solids in the filter feed (not the flowrate of total slurry). However, the V-FOLD’s unique design makes it tolerant of much wider variation in feed conditioning than many other filters.

Polyelectrolytes used with the V-FOLD filter are usually conventional acrylamide polymers or copolymers, which are available from a wide range of suppliers. They are easy to use and not considered to be a "Dangerous Good." Only small amounts are used so the operating cost is usually small.

V-FOLD distributors can advise on polyelectrolyte selection (see Contact Us).

4. Can the V-FOLD operate automatically?

Yes, the V-FOLD can be automated in most applications.  Various models are available to suit the process automation requirements - from “bare” models for site electrical wiring and control, to “dewatering system control automation” models.  The amount of control required for automation depends on the process and its operation.

The V-FOLD is so simple and forgiving that in many applications it can start whenever the effluent plant starts and stop when the effluent plant stops with only occasional checks needed by an Operator.

For those applications needing even less attention, V-FOLD models are available with various options to enhance control and alarm process problems.  Slurry feeding is unusually simple to automate. An optional “V-FOLD automation package” uses ultrasonic level sensing over the feed cavity to control feed rate.  This maintains a desired slurry level in the feed cavity for good dewatering and allows alarming of process upsets.
V-FOLD “dewatering system automation control” models have a control panel fitted to the V-FOLD frame that includes a PLC and Operator interface factory programmed to be exceptionally flexible so it can display and control ancillaries often used in conventional dewatering systems.  “Unattended” operation can be a real option in many applications.

5. Is there much maintenance to be done?

No, the simple, robust V-FOLD design and its slow belt movement mean the V-FOLD is a reliable piece of equipment. An occasional replacement of the filter belt is needed, but this usually takes less than an hour and belts are reasonably priced. Each V-FOLD is supplied with a detailed operating and maintenance manual to make your job easier.

6. Is it difficult to install and commission?

Installation is simple so most Customers install their own V-FOLDs. Installation details are supplied with every V-FOLD.

It usually only takes a day to commission and train the Operators, but we allow 2 days on site to make sure everyone is comfortable with the filter.

7. Can I have a smaller or larger V-FOLD?

Sorry, we only manufacture 2 sizes at the moment - the original SS600 and the larger MAXI-V. Some people chose to install multiple V-FOLD’s rather than a single, large dewatering device, because they like the simple, forgiving nature of the V-FOLD and its competitive price (even when multiple units are needed).

8. Can I have a mobile V-FOLD?

Yes, V-FOLD filters are compact and can be trailer mounted.  Local regulations differ for mounting and electrical requirements, but a conventional trailer is usually suitable.

9. Can I have a demonstration on my slurry?

V-FOLD distributors have demonstration units that we can bring to your site for short-term trials if you have an unusual slurry. These are full size SS600 units mounted on a trailer along with the feed and polymer pumps. We usually carry all the necessary fittings to be "self-sufficient" so a demonstration only takes a day, and all we need is power and water. Check with your local distributor to determine the cost and availability of a demonstration.
